While eggplants are a distinguished member of the “nightshade family” of toxic fruits and vegetables with a sordid literary past, they are actually quite harmless. Eggplants have the highest level of nicotine of any edible plant by far, but you’d have to eat at least twenty pounds to come anywhere near the amount in one cigarette.

Considered a staple of Mediterranean cuisine, the eggplant holds many different names and symbolic meanings around the world. It’s referred to as “aubergine” in England, “brinjal” in South Asia, and even “the mad apple” in Italy. 13th-century Italian tradition foretold that the eggplant can cause madness and Egyptian folklore said that insanity was "more common and more violent" when the eggplant is in season. But in Japanese culture, for the first dream one has in the New Year it is considered particularly good luck to dream of Mount Fuji, a hawk… and an eggplant.
