Sir Edmund Hillary, who, along with Tenzing Norgay, became the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, stated that his success on the mountain was greatly due to lemons. Not only are they high in Vitamin C, but lemons also increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness and more mental energy. So it could be said that every corpse on Mount Everest was once an extremely motivated person who just forgot to pack the lemons. On the same impetus, miners were willing to pay huge sums of money for a single lemon during the California Gold Rush in 1849, which accounts for their continued large-scale production there.

Thanks to the ancient Romans, lemons found their way to the European continent around the 5th Century A.D., several centuries before most other citrus fruits from Asia.   Women in the Renaissance used lemons to redden their lips but wealthy Victorians grew lemons in their homes as a sign of wealth and power. The calming aroma of citrus fruit kept their properties fragrant and they often gave lemons as gifts. Keeping a bowl of lemons on hand in the kitchen has remained a popular tradition, but more so now because they are always useful for preparing food, mixing cocktails and even cleaning.

Perhaps the most intriguing use of lemons is their service in the field of personality research. Introverts tend to respond more strongly to loud noises and other sensory stimulation and testing the amount that humans salivate in response to the taste of lemon can acutely determine if one is an introvert or extrovert. Likewise, testing one’s sensitivity and reaction to even the sight of the sour stimulant can also deduce one’s inclination towards empathy. Seems when life gives you lemons, the key to success is to squeeze it, mix it with some hot water, and keep a keen eye on your companion’s reaction.
