Known as “the fruit of the Gods”, figs hold a position of symbolism in many world religions, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism. The prophet Mohammed reportedly identified figs as the one fruit he would most wish to see in paradise. And some scholars think Eve ate a fig in the Garden of Eden, rather than an apple. Michelangelo indeed painted the forbidden fruit this way on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Early Olympic athletes used figs as a training food and figs were presented as laurels to the winners, becoming the first Olympic “medal.” Meanwhile in Roman times, figs were believed to increase the strength of young people, to maintain the elderly in better health and to make them look younger with fewer wrinkles.

Introduced to the Americas by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century, it was the priests at Mission San Diego who originally plants the dark purple variety that is popular today, hence the name “Mission fig”.
