Because of its limited ripening season from December to January, clementines are often called the “Christmas Orange” and gifting a box of clementines has become a popular holiday tradition (see also: clementine cake). This crown jewel of the citrus world was named for a French clergyman who discovered the hybrid fruit in the garden of an Algerian monastery in 1902. Though clementines quickly made their way to the Citrus Research Center in California as early as 1909, they were mainly appreciated only in Europe until a harsh winter frost ravaged the Florida orange crops in 1997, causing a U.S. surge in clementine popularity. Call them “cuties” or “sweeties” but don’t call them darling. The tragic western folk song ‘Oh, My Darling Clementine’ was popular at least thirty years before the clementine was ever produced.
